Once a month, I meet with a small group of women to sew charity quilts with the goal of creating useful quilts out of scraps and stash fabrics. This month one of our members had done a lot of pre-cutting. We all sat down and sewed like crazy. The result was 3 finished and one partially finished quilt top for Quilts of Valor. They will go to the area Quilts of Valor group who will quilt them and distribute them to returning soldiers.

As usual, I stayed at Bryerpatch Studio and had tons of fun seeing our regular crowd. This photo was taken by Ron Gentry, Caryl’s new husband. We finished up the week, have a blast on Saturday night at Ron and Caryl’s big wedding reception party.

The month of March disappeared into a haze of bronchitis. I’ve been trying to catch up but have had little time for quilting. I only finished two things in the last 6 weeks. The little quilt above was a challenge project for Piece Mill Quilters. While I was sick, I hand pieced the large Lemoyne star in the center. It’s a variation of the Star of the Magi block. I received the Peter Rabbit blocks and the challenge was to make a quilt using them. The quilt will be donated to a sick child at Cardinal Glennon hospital. Then I managed to quilt this little piece on my Handiquilter 16 Sit down machine. One of the Bits ‘n’ Pieces members pieced the top. This quilt will also go to a hospital for a sick child.

This week I met a group of friends to work on another charity project. As a group we pieced the quilt above. It will be donated to Quilts of Valor for a returning soldier. Tracy coordinated the project and kept us all organized so that the blocks went together accurately. In addition to the finished quilt top, we also pieced enough blocks to make a second quilt!

First there was a big snow storm that was so bad that The Quilted Fox was closed and I couldn’t go to work. Then Friday night, I came down with a bad cold which shows no signs of getting better yet. The good news, though, is that I have had lots of time to quilt. First I finished quilting my challenge piece for the Rambling Art Group. We each used the same fabric and designed our own version of a One Block Wonder quilt. I’m pleased with mine!I then quilted my Hawaiian Ring Toss. I cut the circles with the new circle ruler from Creative Grids. The Hawaiian fabrics were a gift from my daughter after she and her husband visited some family there. Finally, I quilted this crib sized quilt from a pattern called Russian Rubix. The fabrics for this one were partly from The Quilted Fox and partly free fat quarters I was given at market last fall. This one will probably become a class.

Now I think I’ll go take more vitamin C and have another nap. I hate colds!

I’m trying to make a deadline for my current consulting project for OASIS and writing time has consumed all of my sewing time! I haven’t even been in the sewing room since I came home from retreat. However I did have pictures of a couple more projects from retreat that i hadn’t posted yet. The small art piece above is called On Golden Lake. It will be my entry in this year’s Bits guild challenge.I also finished just the top of the Russian Rubix pattern by Prairie Grass Patterns. I had a fat quarter pack from Art Gallery Fabrics that I got for free at last fall’s quilt market. I added one fat quarter from my stash and some Kona Cotton white and made this colorful baby quilt. I picked out quilt backs for all my newly finished quilt tops at The Quilted Fox. Now I just have to find time to start quilting!

I had these St. Louis themed sampler blocks all hand pieced over the last few months. I finally got them all sewed together and the binding made. It’s about 60″ square. Now I just have to get it quilted! I’ll be teaching it next fall. Then I sewed the borders on this queen sized Asian scrap quilt. It took a while because I mitered them. This one will be donated next year to the CASA auction in Eureka, CA.

Susan, on the right, finished her Drunkard’s Path quilt top. Tracy, below, finished her Helter Skelter pattern quilt top. We’ve been a very busy group this week!

Louise is making these 8″ square Lemoyne star blocks that are just gorgeous! Some of these blocks have sixty or more very tiny pieces!

We each created a wedge representing our favorite place in the world. It is now on exhibit at The National Great Rivers Museum. My wedge at about 3:00 pm. Here’s a detail. I called it Echoes of England.
